Finding a place to live

There are many housing options for international students, both on campus and around Edmonton.

Here are resources for finding a place to live, including temporary accommodations when you first arrive.

University Housing (Residence)

Living on campus is a great option. International students who prefer living in residence do so because of the convenient location, the organized program of activities to help students build new friendships, the academic support available, and the fact that housing can be arranged before arriving in Edmonton.

Depending on your accommodation preference, there are two types of residences at the University of Alberta:

Applying for Residence

University residences are assigned based on your status as a University of Alberta student and the date your application is received.

Residences fill up quickly, so apply early! You do not need final admission to the university before applying for University housing!

All international undergraduate students who are entering their first year of study at the University of Alberta and who apply for housing before April 30, 2011 are guaranteed a space in one of our residences for Fall 2011.

If you have a preference for a particular residence community, however, make sure you apply as early as possible (starting October 1, 2010).

Your application for housing is separate from your application for admission.

You can apply for housing once you have applied for admission and obtained your 7-digit U of A student ID number. There is a $175 CDN application fee for housing.

Off-Campus Housing

Many students also live in non-University or "off-campus housing." Check out our resources for finding a place, and advice on where to look and what things to consider when renting a place off campus.

Temporary Accommodation

You may need to arrange temporary accommodation for the initial days or weeks after you arrive in Edmonton, while you make arrangements for your long-term housing.

Roommates & Rental Law
